The design and construction of our built environments are largely decided by adults - but what happens when teenagers are offered a chance to put their creativity to work on our most complex challenges and, in the process, asked to experiment through collaborative intervention? Learn about nearly a decade of teen/community built projects anchored by UrbanFrame, a youth design/build program run by Daniel Hewett, architect and Rhode Island School of Design Research Director. Daniel will show examples built by youth, including a box for the public exchange of love letters, a cooler/teaching pavilion for an urban farm, public art that offers habitat for threatened species, and a sugarhouse that doubles as a veterinary care building.

Daniel Hewett teaches in the departments of Landscape Architecture and Interior Architecture at RISD, where his research explores new models for culturally generative infrastructure in rapidly changing cities. He has taught at Northeastern University’s Graduate School of Architecture and MIT, is a frequent critic at architecture schools in the US and abroad, and serves on several community-based design advisory boards. An architect in professional practice since 1993, Hewett's built work ranges from interior and adaptive reuse projects to new residential and commercial commissions.
